Yen Tan 出生于马来西亚，在投身拍电影之前参加过几个表演和写作训练班。他的第一部短片《爱情故事》（Love Stories，2001）在北美诸多电影节上大放异彩，被选为达拉斯录像节（Dallas Video Festival）的“最佳六片”之一。后来他又为 Sony 公司 Philter 唱片旗下的德国流行组合 Riviera 执导了一部音乐录影带，还为 Neiman Marcus 百货公司拍过一档商业宣传片。
他的第一部剧情片《生日快乐》（Happy Birthday, 2002）参加了许多国内和国际电影节，足迹遍及加拿大、欧洲、亚洲和澳洲等地。该片在费城国际同志电影节（The Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival）上荣获评审团大奖，Yen 也凭借该片在波特兰GLBT电影节上获得最佳新晋导演。后来，《生日快乐》的发行权被业内小有名气的 TLA 发行公司买下（该公司曾经发行过C·杰伊·考克斯执导的《闪亮的日子》、Gregg Araki 执导的《神秘肌肤》以及克里斯多夫·何内执导、伊沙贝尔·于贝尔主演的《母亲，爱情的限度》等影片），在奈飞（Netflix）、百视达（Blockbuster）、TowerRecords 和亚马逊（Amazon）等各大DVD零售网站均有租售。

Malaysian-born Yen Tan ventured into filmmaking after taking a series of acting and writing workshops. His first short film, Love Stories (2001) had a successful run at North American film festivals and was voted one of the six Best Of Fest selections at Dallas Video Festival. Yen went on to direct a music video for German pop group Riviera (Philter Records/Sony Music) and an industrial spot for Neiman Marcus.
His debut feature, Happy Birthday (2002) screened at numerous domestic and international film festivals, including Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. The film also won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature at the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival, and Yen was subsequently awarded the New Directors Showcase at the Portland GLBT Film Festival. Happy Birthday was acquired by TLA Releasing, the boutique distributor that also released C. Jay Cox's Latter Days, Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin, and Christopher Honoré's Ma Méré with Isabelle Huppert. It is available for sale and rental at major retailers including Netflix, Blockbuster, Tower Records, and Amazon.
Yen contributed a segment to the acclaimed omnibus film, Deadroom (2005), which premiered at South By Southwest Film Festival and went onto Cleveland International Film Festival and Philadelphia Film Festival. The directorial joint venture was given a Director's Award for Best Narrative Feature at Texas Film Festival.
In the process, Yen was featured as one of the 20 Great Dallasites in the 20th anniversary edition of Dallas Voice. He has earned praises from esteemed author and critic Michael Bronski, who considered Happy Birthday "a work of intelligence and deep emotional sensibility." Trick and Queer As Folk screenwriter Jason Schafer also commended Yen for having "a recognizable voice and a developed style this early in his career."
Currently, Yen has completed a new screenplay, the Sundance Screenwriting Lab semi-finalist Pit Stop and a new film, Ciao, which will begin its festival tour in 2007.
